Behemoth `Messe Noire` Live release

Few could have contemplated the meteoric rise of Poland’s Behemoth, Adam or Nergal as he is more commonly known among the metal masses has developed his musical offspring into something of a monster. He and the band have certainly had their fair share of difficulties especially considering Adam kicked the fuck out of Leukemia back in 2010. Yet, to some, this would have halted any future plans, however this pushed him and band further to create what was to become `The Satanist`, an album that was so highly recognised as a pinnacle in extreme metal circles.

`Messe Noire’ represents where the band has been and are now, it’s a live album that truly showcases what they have achieved. Really, this pin points that despite unfortunate events, the band did not lost any of its potency especially within the realms of his and the band’s anti-religious viewpoints ala ripping a bible up on stage.

`Messe Noire` contains two shows and a shit tonne of music videos for you to sink your teeth into. The band’s overall ethos and themes haven’t changed, yet the way in which it is now done is shown here on a grander scale.

Looking into the show in Warsaw in particular, the band’s stage set up is getting far more extravagant with tonnes of hell raising pyro and more lights than you see on some high streets at Christmas time.

The set list is chock full of the Behemoth hit’s and a certainly if you enjoyed `The Satanist`, you’ll be getting it in its all powerful entirety. It’s an awe inspiring thing to witness a band playing one of their best albums in full and if you have a copy of this beast, even just witnessing the spectacle of it on disc is enough to make your hairs stand on end, plus stick your TV volume nice and loud to get the full whack!

The band also chuck in some golden oldies, from the blistering `Slaves Shall Serve` through to the mesmerising `Ov Fire And The Void`. That goes down an absolute storm with the polish legions in attendance.

`Messe Noire` importantly shows off the band’s anti-religious ideals, which in particular are aimed at the multitude of Christian religion sects is apparent from the get go, from taking religious iconography and making a mockery of its practices certainly shows Adam and co. have no fucks to give and will fully explore their wants at any show. However, beware to those who attempt to stop them, if you don’t like it simply ignore. We still love it!

This release would perhaps be a little better for me personally, if there was a documentary or at least some interviews, for those of us who maybe entering the portal of the Satanist for the first time.

`Messe Noire’ is a superb statement of where Behemoth have been, where they currently stand and a launching pad for the future. It showcases the band’s visual elements perfectly and that just because the band have been thrust more into the public eye than most extreme Metal bands may have been, it shows ultimately the band has not lost any of its potency or venom in delivering it’s message.

9.5/10 – A truly mesmerising live show only encompassed by how far Behemoth has come.
