Wacken Open Air 2015 DVD Review

Wacken Open Air Festival has been and will remain one of the premier Metal festivals in the world, never compromising to bring in softened tastes to appeal to those `normal’ types. Why would they? Why should Wacken compromise? After all it has successfully forged a path since 1990, growing exponentially, eclipsing and being welcomed by the picturesque town of Wacken in Northern Germany.

Each year they release a DVD highlighting the best of the action of the weekend, certainly each year as the festival grows as does the DVD set. how to choose 2 or 3 tracks from some Metal’s premier acts and new artists out of the 100 or so bands that play each weekend is mighty hard task especially to give each band justice, they give you enough of a taste for you to start your own journey.

Opening DVD, you’re treated to quite frankly the metal masters Judas Priest with `Painkiller’ which at Halford’s age is still amazing that he can hit those highs and lows. Next up are In Flames with 2 tracks on the DVD, In Flames appear to be very much a staple at Wacken playing the show numerous times having to come with something new each time they enter the hallowed fields of Wacken. Amorphis, Annihilator, Sabaton and Death Angel all make up the 1st Disc that really shows off the biggest of what Metal has to offer and if you don’t know these guys or some of the other gems on this disc, this is your perfect excuse to pick up the set to learn the ways of the Metal.

Disc 2 carries off in the same suit albeit in a much, much heavier and darker path. The likes of Cannibal Corpse, who go down a treat here, watching the entire front row head banging in a swirl of hair and dust is plenty enough to get one head banging in front of the TV.

British stalwarts Cradle Of Filth here too being possibly Britain’s biggest metal band since Iron Maiden, Cradle Of Filth have bought a macabre set to tonight’s proceedings, hard to think that Dani Filth and co. have been travelling the earth for the past 20 years delivering their trademark black/gothic metal hybrid beast to the masses is an impressive feat and certainly show with this Wacken set they should be one of highlights of the weekend.

Skindred, Anaal Nathrakh and Kataklysm all make up the big names on this disc, yet Wacken DVD’s never seem to just focus on the big names in the heavy world, what it does do is give you some less known artists like Godsized although they’ve been about a while and toured with Black Label Society a few years back, they provide their blend of southern hard rock to a packed out tent.

The Wacken DVD set is a great showcase of what Metal has to offer from the old to the new and everything in between, covering the multitude of genres and styles that Metal has to offer so you can get everything from In Flames to Judas Priest to Cradle Of Filth.

It’s perfect for a newbie or for you to pick up a couple of new bands along the way as Wacken often puts in Metal Battle at the end to showcase some of the best in new bands to keep the flame alight for example Metaprism. What they could do with definitely and I know having one every year maybe a little tedious but a documentary showcasing the history of Wacken or how the festival is set up. Certainly this would add another dimension to the DVD set.

8/10- Wacken at it’s very best, documenting the finest in Metal.
