Turn It Up! A Celebration Of The Electric Guitar Documentary Review

For those of us in the music world, we know that this time of year is NAMM time. Which for those who aren’t aware, it’s a bunch of instrument developers who all get together to show off their new toys, so what a better way to celebrate the magnificent guitar section of that crowd with a documentary about the history of the electric guitar.

`Turn It Up’ is narrated by none other than EE and `Footloose’ wonderment Kevin Bacon and was filmed over the course of 8 years and as we all know 8 years is a long time in rock n roll.

Turn It Up, details the history of the electric guitar from the Rickenbacker Frying Pan guitar and yes it was an actual frying pan, through to the birth of the Fender Telecaster and Gibson Les Paul. The documentary also dives into the guitar war between the giants of the guitar world that being Gibson and Fender, which is definitely raging on today albeit with a tonne more brands added to the pot.

What this documentary does extremely well is take what is a complex history of how the electric guitar was born and how it developed but it simplifies it, although this doesn’t mean it oversimplifies and turns away anything but beginners. An added touch that is heavily utilized is the player interviews, whether that’s a rock star like Slash or blues legend B.B. King chatting about how they got turned onto the guitar and how it still drives them as a person. It also goes into the everyday player, those of us that sit on the couch in front of a terrified pet or family member holding their ears or running in panic and asks why the guitar is so significant in their lives.

It lovingly talks to players about their own experiences with the guitar in that quest to find the ultimate personal tone. The players themselves detail just what the guitar means to them with some of the best explanations are `You can’t hug a Steinway’, they all say that it’s romantic, the feel and shape of a guitar is a thing of beauty and has helped them through some tough times and continues to a be a source of inspiration.

The biggest issue although it’s one that I feel could be addressed on a new documentary is the more modern aspects of the electric guitar, checking out some of the newer companies and shapes, plus looking into NAMM (just a thought).

So overall is it worth your money?
Honestly I believe it is. Now, to sum it all up, this documentary is pretty much your basic history of the electric guitar with added interviews with some of the best known guitar slingers in the business ala Slash, B.B. King (RIP), Jerry Cantrell to name but a few but where this one does differ from checking out rock stars is it shows us more regular ladies and gentlemen who don’t play to 20,000 people at a gig but just to a family who cover their ears to avoid being totally deafened by the wailing noise. My only issue with the documentary is it really only centres on Fender and Gibson’s, yes these are the two biggest names but developing this to include newer names but I digress, it’s the centring of much of the documentary on the vintage guitar market, yes it would be nice to discover a 59 Les Paul stashed away in the attic, worth 400,000 dollars but doubt that. Perhaps, they should do an extra episode all most on the newer companies and the future of guitars.

From Rockstars to CEO’s to the regular Joe, it doesn’t matter, what matters is the passion, the passion for the guitar, the passion to keep playing and to defy the expectations of what society believes a CEO of Southwest Airlines should be doing with his free time or a construction worker. Turn It Up and Turn It Up fucking loud.

8.5/10- A well worthy documentary for all of those with the passion for our stringed lovers.

THE 69 EYES Vocalist Jyrki discusses the album title

Founded in the Finnish capital 25 years ago, THE 69 EYES have spawned a total of ten full-length records and an additional selection of live, best-of and remastered albums. Throughout the band’s legacy THE 69 EYES have managed to thrive and reinvent their distinct blend of goth’n’roll - 2016 sees the band continue on with this legacy in the form of new album, 'Universal Monsters'. Today the band have released the second making of trailer for the new album, which can be viewed over on YouTube:

Vocalist Jyrki explains how they came up with the album title and concept: "I was walking in downtown Austin during the last SXSW festival and ran into this strange castle looking horror shop Sfanthor, which had also a house of wax kind of movie monster exhibition. The classic 30's and 40's movie monsters are something that you love to be afraid of and…love. I thought that would be perfect way to portray THE 69 EYES - as a band of monsters.”

"As I first heard the instrumental demo of the song, it immediately sounded for me like a song from the early 80’s new wave/post punk days. You know, like when the music was heavily inspired by David Bowie’s dark visions, the Cold War, the threat of nuclear war and 1984 - kind of the future. So I wrote such lyrics from the past - and all of a sudden, the history started to repeat itself and the Cold War winds started to blow again! It was very strange - all of a sudden THE 69 EYES have a song which is very 'today' and even political, longing back the days of peace", explains singer Jyrki 69. "We also wanted the video to be artistic and visually capturing the vibe and theme of the song. There is hope but also darkness, violence and innocence. And it’s only goth 'n' roll."

The new album’s cover artwork, as well as the above mentioned video, were created by Finnish photographer and director Ville Juurikkala - known for his work with NIGHTWISH, AMORPHIS, HIM, APOCALYPTICA andMICHAEL MONROE. As the album title Universal Monsters suggests, the band are portrayed in movie monster lightning, showing them as well classic and timeless creatures. “The covers are planned and designed as an old-school CD covers - remember when the booklets used to be as exciting as the album itself?! It will actually have five different covers being such a folder - each member of the band can be used as a cover creature of their own. Ville has really succeeded in capturing the classic movie vibe for the shots without any special make-up or photo shopping. THE 69 EYES are the universal rock ’n’ roll monsters - not so many of us left anymore”, comments Jyrki. “So from real fans I wish they would get the actual CD in their hands to get the full album treatment as we have planned it to be experienced!”

ENTER SHIKARI Live & Acoustic at Alexandra Palace mini-documentary set live and acoustic EP announced

Ahead of their February 2016 headline show at London's Alexandra Palace that closes their UK tour, Enter Shikari went into the venue in December 2015 to visit the site and to record a short acoustic set for a small audience of friends and competition winners.

Rather than use the 10,000 capacity space that will house the full-blown ‘arena rock show’, Ally Pally offered the band the use of the seldom-seen-by-the-general-public Victorian Theatre for the recording. The theatre, largely unused in this century, is a hidden gem behind the main building. A 2500 capacity ornate room that has, over the past 100+ years, served as not only a place of entertainment but also a haven for Belgian refugees, a BBC props store, and a German internment camp.

Footage from the set has been released via the band’s Youtube channel today,
and three of the tracks will be available for streaming and download as a ‘Live & Acoustic at Alexandra Palace EP’ via all outlets from Monday 1st February.

Enter Shikari’s UK tour - which the band recently announced would utilise quadraphonic surround-sound - starts on Thursday 18th February in Glasgow, and ends up at Alexandra Palace on Saturday 27th February before heading out to Europe.
Support for the UK dates comes from The Wonder Years and The King Blues.

EP tracklist ;
1) Torn Apart (Live & Acoustic at Alexandra Palace)
2) Myopia (Live & Acoustic at Alexandra Palace)
3) One True Colour (Live & Acoustic at Alexandra Palace)

Creeper release video for track 'Black Mass'

Taken from new EP ‘The Stranger’, out February 19th on Roadrunner Records UK

Radio 1’s ‘Rockest Record’ and now added to the In New Music We Trust List

Next London gig on March 3rd has been upgraded to The Underworld after the original show sold-out in less than 24 hours

After making a striking debut for Roadrunner Records UK with the sold-out EP ‘The Callous Heart’, the rise of Southampton goth-punks CREEPER continues unabated with the February 19th release of the new EP ‘The Stranger’. Hot on the heels of being added to Radio 1’s In New Music We Trust List yesterday, they build towards its release by unveiling the video for ‘Black Mass’.

“The concept behind the video is a dream that our EP’s cover character named Madeline is experiencing,” explains vocalist WillGould. “She’s in the middle of an episode of sleep psychosis with the band performing to her in her dream. She awakes to find herself in her bedroom.”

“The song’s lyrics are written from the perspective of the character of The Stranger, the heartbroken monster who is the EP’s namesake,” he continues. “They’re partly inspired by recounts of sleep paralysis, where sufferers describe seeing a ‘black matter’ or ‘black mass’ haunting them in their rooms at night, while they lie paralysed in bed.”

Produced by Neil Kennedy at The Ranch, ‘Black Mass’ captures CREEPER’s inherent sense of energy while also evoking the dramatic spirits of Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman.

‘The Stranger’ EP immediately establishes a theatrical air of foreboding with the mood-setting opener ‘The Secret Society’ before the band’s love of The Misfits, Alkaline Trio and The Damned is very much in evidence throughout the pop-punk attack of‘Valentine’. The EP’s closing two tracks really highlight the band’s growing maturity and versatility: ‘Misery’ Is stripped back to a soul-baring vocal/guitar duet before exploding into its climactic finale, and the mid-section of ‘Astral Projection’ focuses on Gould’simpassioned delivery before a final race to the finish line.

‘The Stranger’ EP will be available on 12” vinyl and digital download formats, and can now be pre-ordered from iTunes( as a special package from the Roadrunner Records ( store which also features an exclusive new t-shirt design.

Having recently added guitarist Oliver Burdett and keyboardist Hannah Greenwood to the CREEPER ranks, the band’s new line-up will debut at the Birmingham O2 Institute on February 1st where CREEPER play as guests to Neck Deep.

Their first headline tour as a sextet commences later that month and includes their biggest headline show to date at The Underworld on March 3rd. The White Buffalo `Love and the Death of Damnation’ Review

Sons of Anarchy, you may well be familiar with this bikerathon show and certainly you should’ve heard the climatic song `Come Join The Murder’. Well the harrowing track was sung by one Jake Smith, better known as The White Buffalo. Now, having a rather popular program has probably boosted Jake’s stock, I mean hell I found him that way.

He’s certainly been around for a while though with his first album `Hogtied Like A Rodeo’ came out back in 2002 which was well 14 years ago, see X Factor hopefuls this is the way your career is meant to be built, for the love, not for the prestige or lip syncing in front of Cowell and Co.

Jake’s newest work `Love and the Death of Damnation’ is just bonafidely awesome. Now, personally I deal predominately with the harder, rougher edges of music but there are those that slip through my gauntlets and this one of them.

From the get go, your welcomed by a foot tapping rhythm on `Dark Days’ that’s pretty bouncy and probably more suited to a barn dance or riding your bike on a summers day with the wind in your hair than a rainy day in the UK but hell it takes you to that place.

There’s so many tracks to choose from on `Love and the Death’ that it’s hard to pick just a few to chat about, really this album is a melting pot of acoustic rock, add to that some folk and a large helping of country so imagine lots of lumberjack shirts with Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson riding their Harley’s. `Radio with no Sound’ is a softer more low key outing but is the perfect showcase for Jake’s amazing vocal range, I mean yeah it can’t hit notes that only dogs can hear but there’s a note that he hits late in the song that’s more likely to deploy and earthquake it’s so bloody low.

Without doubt, a personal favourite on the album is `Modern Times’, it entails Jake’s idea of not fitting in this current world but keeping going and the music of `Modern Times’ is bouncy, it’s fun and without doubt if it doesn't make at least make you get your dancing shoes on then something is missing from your soul.

Personally I absolutely loved this album, yes this won’t be to everyone’s tastes but with the rise of guys like Ed Sheeran in the past few years, a guy with an acoustic guitar should be pretty much on record labels hot list, although in this case with an older, American bearded fella and you got The White Buffalo.

It’s foot tapping, it’s getting your groove on, it’s being outside on a summers day with your acoustic guitar and your lady, `Love and the Death of Damnation’ deals with Universal themes of love, loss, heartbreak yet makes these topics so personal and surely that’s what a great songwriter is able to do. Take a universal problem and make you feel that you’re the only one that matters, Jake I mean The White Buffalo does this over 13 tracks of `Love and the Death of Damnation’.

9.5/10- A truly wonderful piece of American country, come folk, come whatever. Just great, fun songs.

Stand out tracks:
`Radio with no Sound’, `Modern Times’ and `Rocky’
