Joe Satriani Shockwave Supernova Review

Joe Satriani is one of the most recognisable names in the world of guitarists. he has own line of Ibanez guitars, he can put his name to a mind numbing list of projects that includes Chickenfoot a band comprising of ex-Van Halen members and G3 a group usually comprising of Steve Vai and a variable list of guitar masters. Yet did you know that sitting there in Joe’s C.V is the fact he taught Kirk Hammett and Alex Skolnick? Not bad eh, having a hand in developing some of the biggest Metal bands around today.

So Joe’s been around for some time and with `Shockwave Supernova’ being his 15th solo effort, some may say that the fiddly guitar solos have been overdone but take one listen to it and you’ll hear that Joe not only combines speed playing of electric proportions, he brings along soul and feel that only a few nowadays muster in the world of guitar.

Joe’s a lifelong sci-fi fan and it probably wouldn’t surprise you that `Shockwave Supernova’ was recorded in the heart of sci-fi Mecca at Skywalker Sound in Lucas Valley, CA. Yes that Lucas Valley. The best way to consider `Shockwave’ could be as one long piece or by playing a star fighter style computer game along with it which would match up perfectly with tracks like `Shockwave Supernova’, `Stars Race Across The Sky’ or `Goodbye Supernova.

In the modern age, Guitar playing has diversified so much that you’re not just a guitar player, you’re now a shredder, a blues player, a heavy metal player, an Indie player and so on and so forth but in each of these areas how many guitarists honestly truly convey their emotions or are able to make the guitar stand in for vocals over a whole album? Not many I bet, but Joe has maintained that and on `Shockwave Supernova’ it’s no different. He truly is one of the greats of guitar playing able to push the boundaries whilst maintaining that special spark that started him off the day Hendrix died.

8.5/10- Joe Satriani still the `Supernova’ of guitars.
