Enslaved `In Times’ Review by Nathan Kerridge-Porter

Fashioned during the elevation of Norwegian Black Metal, Enslaved survived the massive media onslaught during those tumultuous rocky years of Black Metal with church burnings and murders pretty much dominating rock and mainstream media, so to be carrying on extreme metal for over 20+ years now is something.

Black Metal for all of its ways of challenging the norms of music has a very narrow view on how things should be done and almost through the sensationalism it survived for others to take on that mantle but develop it further with bands like Emperor, Dimmu Borgir and indeed Enslaved diversifying the tonality of Black Metal with melodic passages, keyboards and better production.

`In Times’ is Enslaved’s new opus and boy is it fucking good, there are only 6 tracks on the album but if you know haven’t seen the development of Enslaved you would be looking at that thinking 6 tracks that’s a bit short but when the shortest comes in at just over 8 minutes and the longest `In Times’ wallops in at a whopping 10 minutes and 45 seconds, you could be thinking isn’t that too long and boring?

The simple answer to that is hell no, each track shows off just how far Enslaved have taken their brand of extreme metal, `Thurisaz Dreaming’ kicks off the proceedings with furious riffages and pounding drums with the distinct growling vocals of Grutle, yet the addition of the clean vocals really pushes the envelope and makes the song more appealing but the vocals here are more Viking hall than say your more traditional clean vocals that seems to dominate the award ceremonies.

Perhaps the best track, ok in my little opinion, is `In Times’. It truly displays just how to take extreme music over a 10 minute period and keep it interesting throughout, it doesn’t drag for a single moment, with every ounce of what Enslaved produce in abundance and excellently done.

Without doubt what Enslaved have produced here is a superb album and should be one of the albums on everyone’s top 10 by Christmas, with their unique approach to extreme metal, prog and atmospheric noises, Enslaved have created one of the albums you have to hear this year.

Stand out tracks:

`Thurisaz Dreaming’, `Building With Fire’ and `In Times’

10/10- Superb from the Norwegian extreme metal masters.

HELLOWEEN – release album title & artwork

HELLOWEEN are one of the most influential and internationally successful acts of the global metal scene. With the release of their 14th studio album
due on 1st June, the pumpkin heads are set to further cement their title as the founding fathers of German melodic speed metal.
The band's first self-titled EP was released in 1985, making their new album My God-Given Right the celebratory marker for their impressive 30 year career.

The forthcoming album is now available for pre-order exclusively via Nuclear Blast:

My God-Given Right was recorded between October 2014 and February 2015 at the bands very own MiSueno Studio in Tenerife, with long term producer Charlie Bauerfeind (BLIND GUARDIAN, HAMMERFALL) handling production and recording duties.

The enchanting artwork was once again created by graphic guru Martin Häusler (BON JOVI, QUEEN, GOTTHARD) and will also be available as a 3D Lenticular print.

Martin Häusler comments his recent creation:
“We tried to built a world of ideas, keeping the "classical HELLOWEEN" elements, like the pumpkins on the one hand and a complete new look on the other, just like we did it the years before, working on a HELLOWEEN artwork. A first inspiration came from the album title My God-Given Right and some of the song titles like ‘Swing Of A Fallen World’, ‘Lost In America’, ‘Battle´s Won’ etc. During my research I stumbled upon the Blockbuster "Day After Tomorrow" and the idea of just leaving the world to the “pumpkins” was born. The most challenging part of this artwork was to have both, the Limited Edition and the 11" Earbook provided with a 3D-Lenticular-cover (a full 3D cover, visible without 3D glasses). That’s the reason the entire artwork was done 'in one piece', using a 3D program…we did not want one of those 'cheap Lenticular-covers, done by converting a 2d-version', but the best possible real 3D result: So don’t get any other versions – this will be a true collector’s item!”

Frontman Andi Deris states:
”I never know how, but somehow we did it once again…the albums really rocks and kicks some major asses!!! We had the best folks with us to make this possible.
Producer Charlie Bauerfeind and Martin Häusler, who made a massive 3D artwork this time, WITHOUT stressing the whole color range ;-)”

Adds guitarist Michael Weikath:
”... this proves what a bit of snow not only is able to, but really causes! I personally hate snow and the cover shows that too much of everything is never good. Just like Andi Deris, I’m very happy about the new album.”

Their most recent studio effort, Straight Out Of Hell saw HELLOWEEN entering the official German album charts on a sensational #4. Keeping this high position for five long weeks
and charting several other European Top 10 ranking as well as the US Billboard Top 100, Straight Out Of Hell is the most successful HELLOWEEN so far.

EUROPE - 'War Of Kings’ album review by Tamara Madeisa

Rating: 8.8/10

Formalities aside, we push our favourite button and imagine ourselves walking in slow motion and not turning back to look at an explosion behind us. That’s exactly how the first track makes you feel and as you can understand it’s all about the attitude and character that I keep talking about in my reviews.

At this point, I have to confess, after “The Final Countdown” that rocked the whole world and brings happy nostalgic smiles on everybody’s faces, I am involuntary looking for a song, which is going to be just as legendary. Obviously, one cannot expect that, but like I said, it happened involuntarily.

The 4th track - `Praise You’ - we have a great opening riff, somewhat a cowboy feeling and to my surprise and confusion a strong resemblance to Bon Jovi’s “Wanted”, just when he sings “dead air alive”. Maybe it’s just me looking into the contents of the guts of songs all the time, but someone has to tell Mr. Bon Jovi about this. Anyhow, let me know if you hear the same!

Moving to the 6th track `California 405’ - I wanted to mention this song, because I found something special about it, it sort of smells like a dangerous tragedy, hopefully it will makes sense when you listen to it. For this specific reason, in my opinion, it may be one of the songs that will be underrated.

We find “Rainbow Bridge” - a short song with a nice chorus and eastern sounds, which at this point, was very much unexpected to hear. I thought, all songs are going to be quite similar in terms of vocal approach, mood, tempo and verse melodies, revolving mainly around one note, but here I am, pleasantly surprised by this little “Eastern” tune that will find its admirer in everyone of us.

Time for another confession, after the 9th track, I gave up on the album, thinking we are heading towards the end, it’s time for a cool down, goodbyes and full stops. But the last three songs are pieces of art mesmerizing, complex, and musically philosophical and, forgive me yet another slang - “trippy”. These masterpieces bring you Led Zeppelin vibes, something from Deep Purple and still are very unique to sound like EUROPE.

Just a quick note about the last track - Vasastan - to those of you, who don’t know anything about Sweden, Vasastan is Stockholm’s most vibrant and most populated district. Those of you, who know more than that about Sweden or Stockholm, you are welcome to share your knowledge in the comments or invite me for a cup of tea, both are equally good.

In the end, I didn’t find another “The Final Countdown”, (one can only compose so many) but I was surprised and charmed so many times for just 12 tracks, that almost half of the songs are my favourite. The most amazing part of all the music was guitar solos. They were all spot on, had space to breathe, very rock’n’roll, very classic, and sound like they have a story of their own and have just enough air to tell it.

Even though at first it felt like the music is tired and I missed that classic rock’n’roll drive, “living in the moment as if it’s your last” kind of vibe, I have to say that in this album there is everything for everyone. My final words: you would be a fool not to own a copy of this album, at least in one of the available formats.

9ELECTRIC sign to Another Century

Los Angeles based hard rock outfit, 9ELECTRIC, are excited to announce officially inking a world-wide deal with Another Century.

Ron Underwood (9ELECTRIC vocals) states: "I'm completely stoked to now be signed to Another Century. It's a family of true music lovers who put passion into their work. I know this because a lot of the same people helped build my former band's career. It's really good to be back. In a similar twist, it's gonna be awesome to hit the road again with Orgy, only this time with 9E. I've grown a lot since my debauchery days with Opiate for the Masses. Hopefully Jay won't get me to wear booty shorts when I sing 'Blue Monday' with them this time around, ha. The tunes for our debut full-length album are really shaping up. I love writing with my guys! The new rhythms seem generally more aggressive and punchy, but the melodies are becoming slicker as we cut out more and more of the fat. I wanna create this laser beam where you know exactly what everybody's experiencing. It's on the line and absolute in its color and texture. It polarizes the people and creates a battery. That's my goal with 9E."

Check out 9ELECTRIC's latest music video for the track 'Goodbye', which is featured on the group's debut Control EP:

Symphonic Metal Masters KAMELOT return after 2 years of touring the globe and 12 months of intense writing and recording. In mid-2014 the band entered the studio to begin recording their follow-up to the highly acclaimed chart topping album Silverthorn.

The new album titled HAVEN will make KAMELOT history as it will be released worldwide (excl. Asia) on Napalm Records/Universal and Napalm Records/ADA/Warner as an exclusive licensing deal through the band's KAMELOT MUSIC LLC on May 5, 2015 (North America) and May 8, 2015 (Europe and rest of the world) and will showcase KAMELOT at their finest!

Today the breathtaking artwork, track listing and official release dates have been unveiled. HAVEN will be available to pre-order in multiple exclusive and limited bundle packages at the Napalm Records American & European Webstore - starting Thursday, February 26, 2015.

It's time to step into the cinematic, epic and emotionally dynamic world of HAVEN. The new album features all the signature elements of KAMELOT but the band steps out to add new and modern elements along with bringing some amazing emotions that harken to the band's earlier days. KAMELOT’s artsy music is chock full of symbolism relating to how the band feels about the world and the current state of civilization.

"The HAVEN album has an undertone of a world going insane. There is a grey cloud that is forming over our world. We are here to find that silver lining with an album that is both dark and melancholy yet uplifting and giving the listener a HAVEN in a world gone mad. We are really proud of the song elements and diversity on HAVEN” adds guitarist Thomas Youngblood. “The songs run the gambit of dark and melancholy to uplifting and melodic elements.” states vocalist Tommy Karevik.

"Haven has an aggressive edge to it that is the representation of the band as The Revolutionary Change in the storyline," Kamelot's Oliver Palotai tells us.

Produced by acclaimed music producer Sascha Paeth and mastered by Jacob Hansen, HAVEN is a massive album that is sure to please critics and fans alike. Additional guests include Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Troy Donockley (Nightwish) and Charlotte Wessels (Delain). The breath-taking cover and artwork was created by Stefan Heilemann and additional art/layout was done by Gustavo Sazes.

Following the release of HAVEN, Kamelot will embarque on a massive WORLD TOUR, starting with North America in April/May 2015 followed by European shows in the Summer 2015 and with The Haven European Tour in September/October 2015 the band will return to Europe for their biggest headliner tour to date.

Summer 2015 sees the return of multi-award winning music band THE DARKNESS. A new track ‘Barbarian’ is currently manfully straddling the information super highway and is a palate cleanser for their fourth album ‘Last Of Our Kind’, produced by guitarist Dan Hawkins. Penned in Ireland, where the band play a small but perfectly formed tour next month, the record is bursting with the very finest rock-based music available to mankind, as one might expect.

Out 1st June 2015, ‘Last of Our Kind’ will be released in partnership with Kobalt Label Services and is the first album to feature new drummer Emily Dolan Davies. She replaces original drummer Ed Graham who departed in mysterious circumstances. Having been drumming since 1999, Emily has played with everybody from the likes of Bono, Bryan Ferry and Tricky. Now she has shown herself to be equal to the ultimate music challenge.

Emily's ability is face-shatteringly evident in 'Barbarian’ – described by vocalist Justin Hawkins as having “not one but two dramatic monologues, a guitar solo that has been declared 'irresponsible', a riff that weakens lady-knees and a chorus that makes grown men shit directly into their pants." Justin goes on to point out that "The lyrics describe the Viking invasion of East Anglia which culminated in the decapitation of Edmund the Martyr. So yeah, classic Darkness.”

'Last of Our Kind' is the meaty and impassioned follow-up to 2012’s ‘Hot Cakes’ which saw the band reunited having enjoyed a well-publicized and well-deserved hiatus. As distinguished guests of Def Leppard, The Darkness destroyed Download Festival in 2011, then waved goodbye to their loved ones and toured planet Earth for over 18 months. They rounded off 2013 with a celebratory tour marking the 10th Anniversary of their legendary number one debut album. 'Permission to Land' featured the classics ‘I Believe In a Thing Called Love’, 'Love is Only a Feeling', 'Love on the Rocks with No Ice' and 'Love is a Many Splendoured Thing'; it was the fastest selling debut album by a British band in America since that of The Spice Girls.

'Last of Our Kind' will be released on limited edition colour vinyl, Compact Disc and downloadable computer files. The Darkness will be announcing more touring plans for later this year very, very soon.

Black Star Riders `The Killer Instinct’ CD Review

3 years have passed since Thin Lizzy came to end, but from those ashes Black Star Riders were born and came out with `All Hell Breaks Loose’. Since then they have been back in the studio with one and only Mr Nick Raskulinecz who has worked with a who’s who of rock music’s greats to helm the BSR album.

So we all know that a second album is usually a letdown compared to the first, so most bands have at least 18 years to write, ok that’s literally saying from birth but still, is this 2nd effort from the reformed Thin Lizzy worth a listen?

If you like Thin Lizzy or for that matter their new mantra `BSR’ then this will be one for you, yet this isn’t perhaps the classic upbeat tracks that we are used to with Black Star Riders. The opening track `Killer Instinct’ does have that classic bouncy rhythm that Thin Lizzy was renowned for with songs like `Jailbreak’, storming into `Bullet Blues’ is a far heavier affair with the riffs giving of a modern Sabbath edge and for a classic band it’s great to hear them adopting such a modern sound to their arsenal.

`Finest Hour’ is a track that would sit perfectly on any classic Thin Lizzy, it carries that really bouncy almost happy feel that `The Boys Are Back Town’ has and a song that still resonates so highly on classic rock playlists all these years down the line.

`Sex, Guns & Gasoline’ has a rip roaring solo that just proves that even at the tender age of 63 Scott Gorham can still keep up with the young whippier snappers when finding his way around a fret board. What’s bluntly clear throughout the record is what a talent they have on the vocals, Ricky will unfortunately not make the legacy of what Phil did disappear but Ricky’s pipes carry with it the signature Thin Lizzy folk inspired rhythm with the rock raspy deep tone that we have come to expect.

Overall `The Killer Instinct’ is a another step in the evolution of Black Star Riders, slower paced and heavier in places than what may be expected from the ex Thin Lizzy trope but still within the 10 tracks you are treated to the Thin Lizzy and now Black Star Rider bounce.

Stand Out Tracks:

`Finest Hour, `Soldierstown’ and `Sex, Guns & Gasoline’

8/10- A slower, heavier side of Black Star Riders

All That Remains - ‘The Order Of Things’ album review by Tamara Madeisa

Rating: 7/10

So down to business, the first song is “This Probably Won’t End Well” and you’re probably supposed to worry and take it as a warning, or maybe a dare? The sounds you are met with are the opposite of the name. A few seconds of soft atmospheric space-like entrance gets you meditating, but then the band shows what they’re all about and your heart starts racing like the Duracell bunny. At this point, I don’t believe “things will end badly”, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

The second song “No Knock”, but you can hear one clearly as the tune starts, it’s also the track that was leaked by the band before anything else was available and I must say it shouldn’t have been the second one. To my taste, an angry growl and rough energy comes too early on the album, there wasn’t any build-up to it and, well, its position is just unjustified. Moreover, comparing the tune with the other 11, perhaps a different one should’ve been chosen to be leaked.

Later in the album we have the fast, “strong”, mosh pit friendly material, very tasteful vocal harmonies and a healthy scream. (not the throat damaging kind that you do in your bedroom while your parents are gone).

In the middle of the path, specifically song 5, we have an acoustic guitar intro, change our mood and calm down with the volume very much still turned up. I would say, this is a ballad of the album, which also has an incredible lead to the solo.

My favourite, though, is the last song - Criticism And Self Realization. In a way, it sums up the whole album by consisting of hard instrumental backbone, a very distinctive chorus melody that pulls your heart strings and a little growl so that you don’t get too nostalgic of the album just yet. There is a little minus to the track, too. It ends with Yiruma (it’s not his fault they used his music for Twilight!) style piano playing, which is a great way to say “Thanks for listening and goodbye”, but it shouldn’t have been conjoined with the song and made as a separate track instead. Just saying.

In conclusion, it pains me to say that it is an average-good kind of album, despite an amazing production done by Josh Wilburn (Lamb Of God, Gojira, Hatebreed). Also, the shorter songs, that are about 3 and a half minutes long just seem like a pretty packaged product, which has to be comfortably short, but fit in a musically well developed material into a tiny box. Thus, you can imagine that there was no space to justify emotional outbursts of solos or justify the coming of a different section of a song.

Lastly, I would say it’s a very good album for live performances, especially festivals with big crowds as the content is very energising, as I mentioned before, and also has memorable melodies to give your jumping a purpose. To me, it’s a guarantee of a good time and I hope it will be for you.
