Shining/Arch Enemy/Kreator Gig review London Forum 18/12/2014

Tonight’s festivities can be call a Euro Thrash fest or perhaps a guitargasm with Arch Enemy and Kreator offering a smorgasbord of shredtastic guitar players so to see Norwegian’s Black Jazz outfit Shining (5) being on tonight’s bill is certainly a little strange with no real guitar aficionado to speak of within the avant-garde trope. Their mix of Jazz and Metal certainly pushes the envelope with their blend of riffs, saxophones and keyboards is definitely not something we see every day in the Metalsphere, yet for all their effort it didn’t seem to gel, perhaps it was down to the being first up tonight but unfortunately it seemed like their instruments had been dipped in mud despite their great efforts as there were moments when the fantastic Marty Friedman (ex-Megadeth) joined them on stage, the combination of his dazzling guitar work and the Saxophone produce some fabulous duelling that would make a lightsaber fight look dull.

Second up and as Kreator were topping the bill, Arch Enemy (8) took the mantle to really warm up the crowd and boy they do a brilliant job. Armed with new front woman Alissa White-Gluz they do not miss a beat, she energizes the crowd with easy with the Swedes showing off how to make extreme metal into sing-along moments with the guitar leads being privy to a quick singathon. Not only do they have Alissa in their arsenal for tonight’s festivities, they recently acquired Mr Jeff Loomis of Nevermore fame, his link up with Michael is already solid with songs like `My Apocalypse’, `Nemesis’ and new tracks `You Will Know My Name’ rips through the crowd for an early Christmas gift.

When you think of European thrash metal Kreator (9) should come to mind and tonight they are armed with smoke machines, a giant video screen and several confetti cannons. Speeding through a greatest hits set that included `Hoards of Chaos’, `Raise The Flag’ and `Extreme Aggression’ really warm up the audience on this cold winter night.
A surprise rendition of the classic Iron Maiden track `Number of the Beast’ sends the crowd into a frenzy, adding to that eruption of awesomeness, it was also guitarist and frontman Mille’s 47th birthday and was greeted with a cake by members of Arch Enemy, not many people could say that.

A cracking night of guitar wizardry from our European neighbours. If any thinks that Metal is for untrained and uneducated Neanderthals, these bands will prove that you are wrong and you will leave gobsmacked.

NIGHTWISH album – 'Endless Forms Most Beautiful' comes to life!

Right before the peaceful days of Christmas, Finland-based symphonic metal members of NIGHTWISH want to share some important news with everyone.
On March 30th, the hotly anticipated new studio album will be released, entitled 'Endless Forms Most Beautiful'.

"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.”
Charles Darwin, 'The Origin Of Species'

“This classic quote is where it all began. We set sail for the ultimate journey in March 2015, join us!”, adds Tuomas Holopainen secretly.

The detailed cover-artwork was created by longtime collaborator Toxic Angel.
'Endless Forms Most Beautiful' features eleven new songs and will be released in different formats:

Former Iron Maiden vocalist Blaze Bayley is to play a special acoustic showcase on Saturday 10th January 2015 in the lush surroundings of Castle Rock Studios, Alderley Edge, Cheshire. This is to mark the beginning of Blaze's 15th Anniversary year since the release of his iconic first post-Maiden album "Silicon Messiah".

The showcase is hosted jointly by Get Your Rock Out webzine, Rocksector Records and Castle Rock Studios and availability of places at this intimate and unique event is extremely limited. However, in addition to the invitation-only press passes, there will be 10 free tickets made available to fans via a competition run by Get Your Rock Out.

Blaze will be joined on acoustic guitar by Chris Appleton of British metal band Absolva, who plays lead guitar in Blaze's full metal touring band for UK and Europe, as well as Chris' brother Luke who is bassist with American power metallers Iced Earth and has also previously played in Blaze's band.

There will be one support act at the acoustic showcase, singer-songwriter Liz Owen. Liz’s unique vocals and haunting melodies have delighted audiences across the country, and she’ll be setting the scene for a night of stunning music.

As well his customary expansive tours of Europe and South America, on 18th July 2015 Blaze will also be playing a special "Silicon Messiah" exclusive set at SOS Festival, Radcliffe, Manchester. That will be a full metal show with backing band comprised of Absolva band members Chris Appleton (lead guitar), Martin McNee (Drums) and Karl Schramm (bass). The plan is that within the setlist that night, the entire "Silicon Messiah" songs are played plus bonus tracks.

ENSIFERUM: Finnish Folk Metal Collective To Release New Full-Length This February Via Metal Blade Records

Finland's favorite folk metal collective and recent Metal Blade signees, ENSIFERUM, will unleash their sixth studio album this Winter. Titled One Man Army, the predominantly analog-recorded offering was tracked between September and November of this year with award-winning producer Anssi Kippo (Children Of Bodom, Impaled Nazarene, Entwine etc.) at Astia-Studios in Lappeenranta, Finland.

Elaborates ENSIFERUM bassist/vocalist Sammi Hinkka of the sessions, "Recording process was long, hard, rewarding and full of incredible moments. Instruments were actually played and left as they were instead of creating tracks from hundreds of different takes, moving them to the grid and modifying things. Of course computers were used but overall we made everything as analog as possible. Listeners can experience a better sound and natural groove, something that we think most metal albums lack these days. Overall, the album sounds much more like a band playing live rather than 'midi-metal.'"

Commended by Outburn for songs that are consistently "epic" in scope with a "reliance on catchy melodies," ENSIFERUM's One Man Army serves as the follow-up to 2012's lauded Unsung Heroes full-length and boasts the stunningly detailed, mythological cover craftings of renowned illustrator Gyula Havancsák (Annihilator, Tyr, Elvenking, Stratovarius etc).

"On the new album, we took many things musically to the next level so we decided also to try something new graphics-wise," relays Hinkka. "Gyula Havancsák did a phenomenal job! For the first time it was really nice to be more involved with designing the cover and all details. Our humble gratitude to Gyula for all the patience and really amazing results. We couldn't be more satisfied!"

As a precursor to the release, ENSIFERUM recently unleashed the fittingly-titled "Warmetal" for public consumption. Composed by Demonos Sova of Finnish black metal unit, Barathrum, the track is currently available on the covermount CD of the current issue of Germany's Legacy Magazine in all its battle-ready glory.

ENSIFERUM's One Man Army will be released via Metal Blade Records on February 24th, 2015. Further details, including track listing and additional teaser hymns to be unveiled in the coming weeks. In the meantime, 70,000 Tons of Metal voyagers will be able to catch ENSIFERUM live next month before they kick off a massive European trek, wielding their swords alongside Insomnium and Omnium Gatherum. DARK FUNERAL Introduce New Band Members

After launching their brand-new song 'Nail Them To The Cross' some days ago, Swedish black metal legends DARK FUNERAL now introduce their new frontman Heljarmadr and bassist Natt:

With roots in the second half of the 90’s black metal scene and with tentacles in bands such as highly respected Grá, Domgård and Cursed 13 comes a raw force from the underground.

Known as a fierce frontman, both on stage and on recordings with his previous bands, he will now step up and claim a seat in the throne room of DARK FUNERAL to inflict deep scars and infect wounds in the black metal scene. The name Heljarmadr derives from the old Scandinavian languages, simply meaning “a man belonging to hell”.

With long time experience in the arts of creating dark satanic music, he will play a key role in shaping the future vocal and lyrical direction of DARK FUNERAL. Expect nothing but excellence, pure darkness and uncompromising evil!

Treading into this world, Natt has always had a strong, deep interest in music and the arts of the great unknown.

Spending time during the nights, exploring the Swedish ancient forests, avoiding the common mass that wanders this simplistic world, made his relations and visions to that which lies beyond, stronger.

Before DARK FUNERAL, Natt was a member of the black/thrash metal band Angrepp where he met his now close friends Adrian Lawson (Angrepp, IXXI) and Fredrik Widigs (The Ugly, Marduk) and later on joined the deeply devoted Black Metal act, Withershin.

Natt: "Since the beginning of my time, here, in this world, there has always been, a strong connection,
towards the isolated parts of the soul, a connection within and beyond.
A connection to what can not be seen, nor heard.
To everything and nothing.
To what is, and what is not, and that which lies between.
Outside the borders of this life.
Beyond, yet within the acausal flame, in the night, I dwell, beyond the broken circle, outside of the causal mundane, yet not."

With these new members joining the band’s ranks, DARK FUNERAL open the gates to a new chapter of furious, intense and merciless black metal.

Bowling For Soup Announce Greatest Hits Album "Songs People Actually Liked – Volume 1 – The First 10 Years (1994-2003)"

Texan punk rock titans Bowling For Soup have shared a journey that spans two decades!

That's 20 years of laughter and smiles but most of all, infectious song writing, hard rocking tunes and the best live shows you’re ever likely to witness! Bowling For Soup have come a long, long way (and drunk quite a few beers) since forming in the small town of Wichita Falls, Texas, back in 1994. They have spread their enigmatic musical net all over the planet; giving millions of fans a taste of that Lone Star State fun. A few years ago, Bowling For Soup got dropped from their record label. Less than a few weeks after this happened, “The Man” released a BFS GREATEST HITS on their own. They did not consult the band OR the fans on song selection, art work…Nothing! In fact, Bowling For Soup didn’t even know the album existed until months later.

The band decided it was time for them to take matters in to their own hands, and to do it right! They started by making a list of all their singles, fan favourites, and songs that set Bowling For Soup apart from the rest...and boy the list was HUGE! So, they decided to take the first 10 years of their career...and re record it!

And so Bowling For Soup: Songs People Actually Liked – Volume 1 – The First 10 Years (1994-2003) was born. The band have not REDONE any of the songs. No rearranging. No lyric changes. But they first started recording 20 years ago, and really wanted a chance to bring their older material to life (not to mention the fact that they sorta know how to play their instruments now)!
Bowling For Soup: Songs People Actually Liked – Volume 1 – The First 10 Years (1994-2003) is seventeen classic Bowling For Soup songs from the first 10 years of their band including their breakthrough worldwide hit single Girl All The Bad Guys Want, re-recorded to bring them the glory they deserve, plus one brand new original song!

Jaret Reddick comments:

It's been so cool to hear these songs come to life again and all in one place. It's amazing what 20 years of playing, singing and technology can do. Everything just sounds amazing!

“Frontschwein” will be released as standard Jewelcase CD, limited Mediabook CD with alternative artwork and bonustrack (cover on the side), on noble gatefold LP with LP-booklet and as digital download.

“Frontschwein” tracklist:

4. Wartheland
5. Rope Of Regret

On “Frontschwein” (MARDUK’s first completely war-themed album since 1999’s legendary “Panzer Division Marduk”), 25 years of black metal history collide with eons of devastation and destruction amongst human beings. The result is an ugly, furious album true to MARDUK’s sinister legacy and true to the essence of black metal. Welcome to the front. There is no salvation.

Check out the previously released track “Rope Of Regret” here:

Turbowolf announce two tours for 2015

British alt-rockers TURBOWOLF are one of the most thrilling and exhilarating live acts on the planet right now, as their sold-out headline show at Dingwalls last week proved beyond any doubt. “From the moment Turbowolf hit the stage they're completely unstoppable, [shaking] your foundations and demanding that you dance. The band lock into the groove so tight, there's not an ounce of fat between the notes. Turbowolf have evolved into the full package, primed for the big time if tonight's show is anything to go by.” – Metal Hammer

After the storming success of their recent tour with Royal Blood and the ‘Download Freezes Over’ headline tour, the Bristolian groovemeisters are getting back on the road to promote their incredible new album ‘Two Hands’, with a 12-date tour across the UK and Europe supporting Death From Above 1979, and a string of headline dates across the UK in April.

‘Two Hands’ is a master class in taking rock music to the outer limits and creating something truly unique. Stuffed to the gills with grooves, riffs and rhythms to make you lose your mind it reaches deep into the secret history of mankind, ponders the wonders of evolution and even includes references to the government’s mysterious mind control program, ‘MK Ultra’.

From the slow and sludgy Black Sabbath-esque chugs of ‘Pale Horse’, to the relentless, frantic beats of ‘American Mirrors’ and ‘Rich Gift’, to the more laid-back, trippy sounds of ‘Invisible Hand’ and ‘Toy Memaha’, Turbowolf have delivered an album of unassailable sonic adventure, with an abundance of eclectic electronics, throbbing bass, bruising drums, fizzing guitars and the kind of vocals from singerChris Georgiadis, that have you believe he’s singing for his very survival.

And in amongst the far-reaching eccentricities that Turbowolf have made their own, the band have an impeccable ear for a hit with current single ‘Rabbits Foot’ eating up the airwaves with huge support at Radio 1, and the likes of ‘Solid Gold’, and ‘Nine Lives’ delivering the kind of twisted melodies that will have your head spinning for days.

After spending most of 2013 writing the album, the band took to the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales to record it in a frenzied six weeks, breaking every rule they could in the search for sonic excellence. The result is an absolutely incredible body of work, co-produced with Tom Dalgety (Royal Blood, Band of Skulls, Opeth).

‘Two Hands’ will be the first official release from Turbowolf after they signed to Universal Music as the first band announced under the joint venture between Spinefarm Records and Search & Destroy back in November. Their next UK tour will see them step up from eccentric cult favourites to the rock’n’roll heroes of 2015.

Great Britain - prepare yourselves for the musical apocalypse that is Turbowolf. The band are standing on the cusp of great things, ready to spread their wings and fly!

"Chris Georgiadis is arguably one of Britain’s most charismatic frontmen. If the rest of the new album packs as much punch as 'Rabbits Foot', they could be on to something pretty remarkable" – Q Online

"Stuffed to the guts with Turbowolf’s distinctive rubber-buzzsaw riffs and Technicolour stomp, boding well for a strong showing next year from one of the UK’s most under-appreciated rock bands.” – Clash Music

“Turbowolf’s implicitly sexual sound is as defiant as it is emphatic” – Kerrang
